San Sebastian College's historic win in the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) has earned the Golden Stags a special recognition from the UAAP-NCAA Press Corps when the group holds iits 2011 Collegiate Basketball Awards on January 21.

The Golden Stags are set to receive the Distinction for Excellence for becoming the first NCAA team to win the annual tournament that gathers the top varsity teams in the country.

Several members of that squad will also be feted by the group of scribes from various broadsheets, tabloids and online publications covering the varsity beat.

San Sebastian, which lost to San Beda in the NCAA finals, bounced back strong to win the PCCL crown.

The Topex Robinson-mentored Stags, with ace players Calvin Abueva and Ian Sangalang leading the charge, bucked Ronald Pascual's absence the entire tournament to dethrone two-time defending champion Ateneo in the finals.

Pascual, who missed the latter stages of the tournament due to an injury, earned the Impact Player award while talented center Sangalang will share the Mr. Efficiency honors with Far Eastern University's Aldrech Ramos.

Ramos' teammate RR Garcia will be given the Court General award for powering the Tamaraws to the UAAP finals for the second straight season.

The awardees join the early winners that include Abueva, Ateneo's Greg Slaughter and Kiefer Ravena, National University's Bobby Ray Parks and San Beda's Garvo Lanete (Mythical Team), Ateneo tactician Norman Black (UAAP Coach of the Year) and San Beda mentor Frankie Lim (NCAA Coach of the Year).

Also receiving distinctions are Ateneo's Nico Salva (Pivotal Player), Emman Monfort (Maynilad Super Senior) and Kirk Long (Defensive Stopper), San Beda's Dave Marcelo (Pivotal Player) and Letran's Kevin Alas (Energy Player). — JVP, GMA News
