PAGASA: Flash floods, landslides threaten east Visayas, Mindanao

January 24, 2012 7:21am
Possible flash floods and landslides threaten parts of Eastern Visayas and Mindanao due to a wind convergence, or the meeting of winds from different directions, state weather forecasters said Tuesday.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration also said the diffused tail end of a cold front threatens to bring rain to parts of Central and Southern Luzon.

"Ang silangang bahagi ng Hilaga at Gitnang Luzon at Silangang Visayas at Mindanao ay magkakaroon ng kalat-kalat na pag-ulan, pagkidlat at pagkulog," PAGASA forecaster Manny Mendoza said in an interview on dzBB radio.

PAGASA's 5 a.m. bulletin also said the diffused tail end of a cold front is affecting the eastern sections of Central and Southern Luzon while a wind convergence is affecting Eastern Visayas and Mindanao.

"(The) eastern sections of Central and Southern Luzon, Eastern Visayas and Mindanao will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms becoming cloudy with widespread rains over Southern Mindanao which may trigger flash floods and landslides," it said.

The rest of the country, meanwhile, will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.

PAGASA also said moderate to strong winds from the northeast will blow over Luzon, making its coastal waters moderate to rough.

Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the east and northeast, which will make seas slight to moderate.

NDRRMC warns Mindanao residents

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council urged residents in the Eastern and Central Mindanao to take precautions against rain.

NDRRMC head Benito Ramos noted cloud formations over Eastern and Central Mindanao since Monday, radio dzBB's Benjie Liwanag Jr. reported.

PAGASA also said strong to gale-force winds from the northeast monsoon may affect the seaboards of Luzon.

"Fishing boats and other small seacrafts are advised not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves," it said. –KG, GMA News
