PNoy: PHL safe despite Makati bomb blast

January 25, 2012 3:11pm
President Benigno Aquino III assured the public on Wednesday that it is still safe in the country amid the fear caused by the recent explosion in Makati City.

“I don’t think we are any worse off than a lot of other countries,” Aquino told reporters after inspecting a model house in Iligan City for the victims of tropical storm Sendong. “Kung may newscast on religious riots in Africa and the Middle East, and they are talking about it also, are we any less safe?”

He added: “Is it safe to be in Norway when one solitary gunman killed 80 plus? Is it safe to be in Tokyo when a cult unleashed poison gas? Are we any different from any other country in the world?”

On Monday, an improvised explosive device exploded in a vacant lot on HV dela Costa Street in Makati City. No one was injured, although the blast created a small crater on the ground, shattered some glass panels, and slightly damaged a parked car in the area.

Aquino said he reminded the country’s security and intelligence services that the Makati blast last Monday — as well as last year's bombing of a bus in the city — should be their priority.

“This has to be a priority and that they should designate, task specific groups who will drop all other cases that they are presently investigating to concentrate solely on this and the bus bombing incident, if you remember, which happened roughly about a year ago,” he said.

Four people were killed while 14 others were injured when a bomb planted inside passenger bus Newman Goldliner (TXJ-710) exploded while the bus was cruising along EDSA on Jan. 25, 2011.

Aquino said he had a meeting with security officials last Tuesday to identify the cause of the explosion, but they have yet to tag a specific group or personality behind the incident.

The President said he ordered the security forces to reinforce its “hardening aspects” in potential target areas to lessen the opportunity of terrorist groups to harm the people.

'Yung pulis magkakaroon ng more visibility, foot patrols together with ‘yung mga tanod. Ganoon ka-direct natin gagawin sa bawat community plus so many other things now that are ongoing, but I cannot tell you all of the details lest maghanap na naman ng palusot or lusot itong mga masasamang elemento na ito,” he said. — Amita O.
