Senate warns vs release of evidence in Corona trial anew

January 26, 2012 3:12pm
The Senate on Thursday warned both the prosecution and defense panels in the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona against the public release of documents marked as evidence.

Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, who presides over the trial, appealed to both camps to exercise caution in discussing the contents of the documents, especially the confidential ones, being submitted to the impeachment court.

“May we request the spokesmen not to discuss evidence and merits outside of this court. They may discuss the procedure but not the content,” he said during the continuation of the trial on Thursday.

The warning came after Senator Joker Arroyo said that documents relating to Corona’s income are “sacrosanct” and should not be released to the public.

“The rule is simple: any evidence that is marked is not yet public document. It is nothing but a piece of paper. It is not public document until it is admitted,” he said.

Senator Pia Cayetano supported Arroyo’s statement, saying that marked documents are not meant to be “paraded” before the media.

Senator Panfilo Lacson, however, expressed reservations on his colleague’s warning, pointing out that the impeachment trial is a public proceeding.

At the start of the trial, Enrile also reminded both camps to observe the Senate rule prohibiting the discussion to the public the merits of the impeachment case. — Andreo C. Calonzo/KBK, GMA News
