Some 71 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) are expected to arrive on Thursday from Syria in two separate flights, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) said.
In a statement, OWWA said 32 OFWs will be onboard Emirates Air flight EK 332 arriving at 4:20 p.m. while another 39 are expected to arrive via Qatar Airways flight QR644 at 10:15 p.m. These OFWs have availed of the mandatory repatriation program of the Philippine government which raised the alert to Syria to 4 in December last year.
OWWA Acting Administrator Josefino Torres said the repatriation was made possible through the continuous negotiations made by a Philippine team composed of representatives from the:
- Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA);
- Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), and
- OWWA.
OWWA said exit clearances and other documentary requirements were issued to the OFWs after their employers agreed to let the workers go home. More workers are expected to come home within the next days as the Philippine Embassy in Damascus continues to persuade Filipino nationals to leave the war-torn country. - VVP, GMA News
