Pacquiao-Floyd Jr 2012 fight getting bleak
It appears that a Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight in 2012 is getting bleak after the 33-year-old Filipino boxing icon insisted on a 50-50 split in purse—and nothing less—for the bout the whole world wants to see to push through.
Pacquiao remained firm that he wants an equal sharing in the earnings to be generated out of the expected blockbuster bout, a move that does not sit well with Mayweather Jr.
The Fighting Congressman from the lone district of Sarangani province said the possibility of holding the mega-fight in May this year is getting dim.
Mayweather, 34, raised his initial purse sharing offer from 70-30 to 60-40. The reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion rejected both proposals.
"Ang gusto niya bigyan na lang ako ng $40 million, pero the rest, pati 'yung pay-per-view sa kanya na. Hindi naman yata tama yun," said Pacquiao.
If a deal for a May fight with Mayweather fails to materialize, Pacquiao is set for a June 9 ring return with any of the four fighters—Tim Bradley, Miguel Cotto, Juan Manuel Marquez and Lamont Peterson—that Top Rank chief Bob Arum had shortlisted.
Cotto said he'll agree to a rematch with Pacquiao if the fight takes place above the 147-pound welterweight limit.
"I'm going to do it (rematch) my weight," said Cotto, now the current World Boxing Association (WBA) junior middleweight champion. "I will not sacrifice my body again for the benefit of another boxer. It won't happen at 147 lbs."
Pacquiao and Cotto fought for the WBO welterweight title in 2009, which the Filipino southpaw won behind a brutal 12-round technical knockout.
