CBCP starts plenary assembly, unclear on statement on Corona trial

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines started Saturday its three-day plenary assembly at the Pope Pius XII Center in Manila.

While it remains unclear if the CBCP will issue a statement on the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona, bishops said they are aware of the issue.

“Unless there are moral evils and if there is really need to make a stand, that’s when we issue statements,” said Caloocan Bishop and CBCP public affairs unit head Deogracias Iñiguez Jr., according to an article posted Saturday on the CBCP news site.

But the CBCP quoted its former president and Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo as saying the bishops are hoping the “truth and justice” would prevail.

The CBCP noted Sen. Gregorio Honasan II had urged the CBCP to provide moral guidelines about the trial.

At least 130 active and retired bishops had been invited to the twice-a-year meet to discuss concerns affecting the Church and the country.

It is also the first time for new CBCP president and Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma to preside over the assembly.

This plenary assembly was preceded by a four-day seminar that ended Friday on a proposed National Summit for Good Governance and a Critique on Sex Education Program by Dr. Judith Reisman, visiting professor from the University of Virginia in the US. — LBG, GMA News
