Palace backs probe of SC admin over 'misuse' of WB funds
Malacañang on Saturday voiced support for the investigation initiated by one of its allies in the House of Representatives against Supreme Court Administrator Jose Midas Marquez over alleged misuse of Judicial Reform Support Project (JRSP) funds from the World Bank.
While she insisted the Palace had no hand in the complaint filed by Akbayan Rep. Walden Bello, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said Marquez can now defend himself before the proper forum.
“Mas magandang paraan yan (It is a good way to determine accountability) ... we have always stated the World Bank report did contain a list of ineligible expenses. This is a concern because public funds will be used to pay that loan,” she said on government-run dzRB radio, when asked if the Palace supported Bello’s move.
“Certainly, kung may accountability idaan natin sa tamang proseso. Pag pinasagot siya mabigyan siya ng due process. Okay sa atin ito, pagkakataon niya ito... idaan sa tamang venue," she added.
She also downplayed speculations the filing of the complaint before the Office of the Ombudsman was premature, and insisted Bello was acting on his own.
“I believe he did it on his own on his initiative,” she said when asked if the Palace was behind Bello’s move.
Asked if the filing of the complaint is premature, she said it is up to the Ombudsman to decide.
On Friday, Bello lodged a complaint before the Ombudsman against Marquez over alleged misuse of the JRSP and for allegedly abusing his office "lawyering" for impeached Chief Justice Renato Corona.
