Senate may continue Corona trial during 2-month break — Miriam

January 29, 2012 4:27pm
The Senate, acting as the impeachment court, might continue its hearings on the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona even during a two-month break that will start on March 24.

Sen. Miriam Santiago hinted at this Sunday as she said senator-judges, if they so decide, may “suspend” the legislative calendar that calls for a break from late March to early May.

“Nasa amin yan, depende sa pag-uusap namin. Natural ‘pag Holy Week mismo we have to observe the laws on the observance of holidays, dahil nakalagay sa Senate rules of procedure,” she said in an interview on dzBB radio.

Under the Senate’s legislative calendar, the session will be adjourned from March 24 to May 6. Session resumes on May 7.

The possibility of cramming the hearings stemmed partly from the number of witnesses — at least 90 — the prosecution had said it plans to present.

However, Santiago said she would prefer that she spend the entire break – or at least get some weeks off – to read all the pleadings from both sides.

She said senator-judges have not had much time to read all the legal documents submitted to the impeachment court, noting the documents are submitted at about noon, and the trial starts 2 p.m.

“[Reading] all these pleadings have to take time,” Santiago said. — KBK, GMA News
