PAGASA warns vs predawn floods, landslides from cold front
State weather forecasters advised residents in the eastern parts of the country Wednesday to be on alert against possible predawn flash floods and landslides as a result of a cold front, which is most intense at night and before dawn.
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said the tail-end of a cold front continues to affect Northern and Eastern Luzon.
"Kalimitan niyan nangyayari madaling araw. ‘Yan ang kalimitan, ang dulong buntot ng cold front mas matindi sa gabi at madaling araw, kaya mag-ingat dahil kung kailan ka tulog maaaring magkaroon ng flash floods lalo sa lugar na prone sa landslide at flash floods," PAGASA forecaster Elvie Enriquez said in an interview on dzBB radio.
She said residents particularly those in flood- and landslide-prone areas in places affected by the cold front should stay alert.
Enriquez said the cold front may bring intense rain showers.
Also, she said the northeast monsoon responsible for the cold winds may last during February.
"Umiiral pa rin ang amihan. Inaasahan natin ito [hanggang] February," she said.
PAGASA's 5 a.m. bulletin said Northern and Eastern Luzon and Eastern Visayas will have mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and isolated thunderstorms.
The rest of the country, on the other hand, will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.
Coastal waters over Luzon and Eastern Visayas will be moderate to rough due to the moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast.
Elsewhere, winds from the northeast will be light to moderate, resulting in slight to moderate seas.
Meanwhile, PAGASA said strong to gale-force winds from the northeast monsoon may affect the northern and western seaboards of Northern Luzon.
"Fishing boats and other small seacraft are advised not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves," it said. –KG, GMA News
