Flash floods and landslides from an intensified amihan (northeast monsoon) may threaten Bicol and parts of the Visayas and Mindanao, state weather forecasters said Friday.

 

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said rain may also fall on other parts of the country.

 

"Patuloy na palakas ang hanging amihan. Ito ay nakakaapekto sa silangang bahagi ng Luzon at Visayas at ito ay nagdudulot ng malamig na hangin," PAGASA forecaster Gener Quitlong said in an interview on dzBB radio.

 

He said Metro Manila and parts of Visayas can expect cold weather.

 

PAGASA's 5 a.m. bulletin indicated the northeast monsoon is affecting the eastern sections of Luzon and Visayas.

 

"Eastern and Southern Luzon, Visayas, Northern and Central Mindanao will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and isolated thunderstorms becoming cloudy with widespread rains over Bicol region, Eastern Visayas and Northeastern Mindanao which may trigger flash floods and landslides," it said.

 

The rest of Luzon will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated light rains.

 

Meanwhile, the rest of Mindanao will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.

 

Coastal waters in Luzon, Visayas and Eastern Mindanao will be moderate to rough as moderate to strong winds blow from the northeast.

 

Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate from the northeast, making seas slight to moderate.

 

Meanwhile, PAGASA said strong to gale-force winds from the northeast monsoon may affect the seaboards of Luzon, Eastern and Western Visayas.

 

"Fishing boats and other small seacraft are advised not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves," it said. –KG, GMA News
