Legal row threatens to delay repatriation of Iggy remains
A legal row in London threatens to delay the repatriation of the remains of the late Negros Occidental Rep. Ignacio "Iggy" Arroyo Jr., the lawyer of the late lawmaker's wife said Saturday.
Lorna Kapunan, who represents Arroyo's widow Aleli, said Arroyo's partner Grace Ibuna had taken legal action to prevent the release of the remains to her client.
"Si Grace Ibuna kumuha ng abugado... Ang sabi ng funeral parlor hindi pwede kunin ang remains kasi nag-file ng kaso sa UK si Grace Ibuna to prevent the release of the remains," she said in an interview on dzBB radio.
For now, she said she will wait for the decision of the late lawmaker's family on what to do next.
Kapunan said she was told Ibuna wanted to have the late congressman's remains cremated in the UK.
She said they were shocked because they already made arrangements for the return of Arroyo's remains to the Philippines.
"Humingi sila ng papeles, ibinigay namin ang papeles, may official endorsement ng embassy, seeking all possible assistance to the legal wife Aleli Alicia Arroyo, including a legal opinion (They asked for documents. We gave an official endorsement of the Philippine embassy seeking all possible assistance to the legal wife, Aleli Arroyo)," she said.
But she said Ibuna had represented herself as Arroyo's next of kin.
