Palace not objecting to Arroyo extended stay in govt hospital

February 4, 2012 12:45pm
Malacañang is backing the recommendation of the Department of Interior and Local Government and the Philippine National Police to let former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo stay at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said the Palace is leaving to the DILG and PNP the matter of securing detained Mrs. Arroyo, now a congresswoman representing Pampanga’s second district.

“Hinahayaan ng Pangulong Benigno Aquino III when it comes to matters of securing the former president, hinahayaan niya ang DILG at PNP," Valte said on government-run dzRB radio.

She said the Palace is aware the PNP’s decisions are based on caution, adding it does not want the PNP to be blamed if something untoward happens.

Arroyo is under hospital arrest at the VMMC in Quezon City, where she has been staying since Dec. 9 last year. She was brought there from the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig City.

The former leader faces the non-bailable charge of electoral sabotage. The Pasay court issued a warrant for her arrest based on the charge.

Earlier, the Commission on Elections moved to have Arroyo transferred to a regular detention facility after noting her health has improved.

But at the hearing last Friday at the Pasay City Regional Trial court on the Comelec's request for transfer, a doctor of Arroyo said the former president may not be ready yet for detention in a regular cell as she still needs to undergo regular physical therapy. —  LBG, GMA News
