3 more quakes hit Negros area

Three more powerful quakes jolted the Negros area Monday night, seven hours after a devastating magnitude-6.9 quake rocked the area.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) recorded a magnitude-6.2 quake at 6:10 p.m.

In its report, the NDRRMC said the quake's epicenter was 2 km northwest of Tayasan in Negros Oriental and was tectonic in origin.

The NDRRMC said the quake was felt at:
  • Intensity IV: Sibulan, Negros Occidental; Iloilo City
  • Intensity III: Dipolog City; Sipalay, Negros Occidental; Guimaras; Tagbilaran City; Cebu City; Dumarao and Dumanlag, Capiz
  • Intensity II: San Jose de Buenavista, ANtique; Bugo, Cagayan de Oro City

Damage and aftershocks were expected from the quake, the NDRRMC said.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said another quake measuring magnitude 6.0 was recorded at 7:33 p.m. It said the epicenter was traced to:
  • 61 km north-northwest of Dumaguete, Negros Oriental
  • 90 km west of Tagbilaran, Bohol
  • 96 km south of Bacolod, Negros Occidental
  • 577 km south-southeast of Manila.

A third quake measuring magnitude 5.2 was recorded at 7:40 p.m., with the epicenter at:
  • 65 km north-northwest of Dumaguete, Negros Oriental
  • 92 km south of Bacolod, Negros Occidental
  • 92 km west-northwest of Tagbilaran, Bohol
  • 573 km south-southeast of Manila

There was no initial report of further damage or casualty from the quakes recorded by the USGS. — KBK, GMA News
