February 7, 2012 10:20am
A senior United Nations official lauded the Philippine government for its disaster response after the country was hit by tropical storm "Sendong" (international name: Washi), the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Tuesday.

UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in the Philippines Jacqueline Badcock made the commendation during a televised briefing for the international donor community on the "Second Emergency Revision of the Philippines (Mindanao) Humanitarian Action Plan 2012," the DFA said in a news release.

"She emphasized the excellent national coordination by the government with the UN, foreign donor governments and organizations, and foreign and domestic civil society groups," the DFA said.

The DFA said Badcock recognized Philippine policy and legislative measures to reduce disaster risk.

Organized by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the briefing was held at the UN headquarters in Geneva on February 3.

The Second Revision calls for some $39 million in additional assistance for Sendong victims.

Meanwhile, Philippine Permanent Representative to the UN and Other International Organizations in Geneva Evan Garcia thanked governments and organizations that have helped Sendong victims.
