Search giant Google paid tribute to English novelist Charles Dickens on his 200th birth anniversary with images of characters from some of his most famous works.

Visitors to Google's home page (www.google.com) would see the word "Google" in longhand, with images of characters from Dickens' famous works.

As in the past, clicking on the Doodle would lead to a search results page on the graphic's subject —in this case, Charles Dickens.

UK's The Telegraph said the characters in the doodle included those from Dickens' works "A Christmas Carol" and "Great Expectations."

It said these included Ebenezer Scrooge, the main character in "A Christmas Carol" who was a cold-hearted, tight-fisted and greedy man in the beginning but was changed in the end.

The Telegraph said other characters depicted included Cratchit, an abused underpaid clerk of Scrooge; and Pip (Philip Pirrip), an orphan whose growth and development was depicted in Dickens' novel "Great Exectations".

Dickens was born February 7, 1812 and died June 9, 1870.

He was an English novelist, generally considered the greatest of the Victorian period.

Many of his writings were originally published serially, in monthly installments. — TJD, GMA News
