Palparan maintains innocence, says he will not surrender

February 7, 2012 7:34pm
Retired Army general Jovito Palparan, wanted for a kidnapping case, has no plans of surrendering even after repeated appeals from Malacañang and the manhunt operation launched by communist rebels.

In a statement issued through his lawyer, Palparan maintained that he is innocent of the charges being leveled against him regarding the disappearance of two University of the Philippines students in 2006.

"I will not allow myself to be a victim of this farce. My name is clean, and I have served our great AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) with all my mind, soul and body," he said in the statement as shown on a report in GMA News TV on Tuesday.

Palparan has been in hiding since December after a court in Malolos, Bulacan issued a warrant of arrest against him and several others for their alleged involvement in the disappearance of UP students Sherlyn Cadapan and Karen Empeño.

The government is offering a P1-million bounty for his arrest. The communist New People's Army (NPA) has also joined in the manhunt.

On Tuesday, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte urged Palparan to surrender in light of the manhunt launched by NPA rebels.

“Considering what the other alternatives are in light of recent events, yes, to surrender will be his best option,” Valte said at a press briefing in Malacañang. — KBK, GMA News
