US Embassy, VP Binay condole with Visayas quake victims
The United States Embassy in Manila on Tuesday sent its condolences to the victims of the magnitude-6.9 quake that hit the Negros area in Central Philippines on Monday.
In a statement, US charge d'affaires Leslie Bassett also commended local and national authorities for their efforts to help the victims.
"The Embassy of the United States offers its condolences to all those affected by the recent earthquake near Dumaguete, and the following aftershocks. Local and national authorities, working with civic organizations, are making significant efforts to assist victims of this tragic natural disaster. We applaud their dedication and expertise," she said.
As this developed, Vice President Jejomar Binay flew to Negros Oriental on Tuesday to sympathize with victims of the earthquake.
He also assessed the damage to Negros Oriental, which was hit hard by the quake, according to a news release of the Office of the Vice President.
“Nakikiramay po ako sa pamilya ng mga nasawi sa lindol. Salamat sa Diyos at kaunti lamang ang nasawi sa trahedyang ito,” Binay said.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said that as of Tuesday night, 22 people have been confirmed dead while 71 others were reported missing.
The OVP news release said Binay visited Guihulngan City, one of the towns hit hard by the quake.
He also conducted an aerial inspection of the affected region and met with provincial Governor Roel Degamo and mayors Manuel Sagarbarria (Dumaguete City) and Ernesto Reyes (Guihulngan City); and military Central Command chief Lt. Gen. Ralph Villanueva.
In the meantime, Binay appealed to the private sector to extend help to the quake victims, particularly by donating drinking water.
Binay also offered his condolences to the victims and gave P5,000 each to the families of 20 people who died in a landslide in Guihulugan City.
He reiterated Degamo's appeal to the residents not to panic, and not to worry since the Aquino administration will help them. - KBK, GMA News
