February 8, 2012 8:49am
Police in Manila secured Mendiola Bridge near Malacañang Wednesday as militant groups planned protest rallies to mark the 52nd birthday of President Benigno Aquino III.

The Manila Police District deployed teams to watch the possible areas where militants are to gather before marching to Mendiola, radio dzBB’s Carlo Mateo reported.

Some of the groups were to gather at C.M. Recto Avenue while others were to gather at the University of Santo Tomas area along España Avenue.

Militant groups had planned to mark Aquino’s birthday by protesting fuel price hikes and rate hikes in power and basic utilities, the report said.

The report quoted Manila Police District chief Senior Superintendent Alex Gutierrez as saying they will exercise maximum tolerance but will make sure the protests are peaceful.

On the other hand, Aquino is not likely to hear the protests as he had planned to visit areas in Negros Oriental that were devastated by a magnitude-6.9 quake last Monday. — LBG, GMA News
