Corona supporters gather at SC; two streets closed to traffic
While groups allied with President Benigno Aquino III rallied outside the Senate to push for the conviction of impeached Chief Justice Renato Corona, Corona's supporters gathered outside the Supreme Court Thursday noon to show support for him.
The sheer number of supporters prompted the closure of the corner of Padre Faura Street and Taft Avenue to traffic, radio dzBB's Carlo Mateo reported.
Many of the supporters brought streamers with messages that read, "Uphold rule of law," the report said.
Inside the Supreme Court premises, dzBB's Cecilia Villarosa reported many high court employees streamed out of their offices at noon, wearing red in support of Corona.
No violence was reported so far, the report added.
Earlier on Thursday, groups allied with Aquino – the "Black and White Movement" and Akbayan – rallied near the Film Center to press Corona's conviction by the Senate impeachment tribunal.
But the groups could not get closer to the Senate premises as anti-riot police held them back.
Meanwhile, the SC en banc was to tackle motions related to the impeachment trial of Corona.
Among the more recent motions were one asking it to stop the ongoing impeachment trial at the Senate, which started last Jan. 16.
On Wednesday, Corona and his camp asked the high court to nullify the impeachment proceedings against him, but said it was merely exhausting all possible legal remedies. Among the reasons they cited was the allegedly defective impeachment complaint. — LBG/KBK, GMA News
