Weather: Potential cyclone enters PHL territory, PAGASA says
A potential cyclone — a low-pressure area (LPA) — entered Philippine territory Thursday afternoon, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
In its 5 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA said the LPA was estimated at 960 km east of Mindanao as of 2 p.m. Thursday.
But while its forecasters said earlier the LPA may not affect any part of the country until this weekend, PAGASA said parts of the country may still expect rain on Friday due to the northeast monsoon affecting Luzon and Visayas.
"The eastern section of Northern and Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and isolated thunderstorms becoming cloudy with widespread rains over the Bicol region, Eastern Visayas and the Northern and Eastern Mindanao which may trigger flash floods and landslides," it said.
The rest of Luzon will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with light rains, it said.
PAGASA did not immediately assess the chances of the LPA becoming a cyclone.
PAGASA forecaster Aldczar Aurelio said the effects of the LPA may be felt as early as Saturday in Eastern Mindanao.
Meanwhile, PAGASA said moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast will prevail over Luzon and Visayas and coming from the northeast to north over Mindanao.
The coastal waters throughout the archipelago will be moderate to rough, it added.
Gale warning
Meanwhile, PAGASA said strong to gale-force winds may affect the seaboards of Northern and Central Luzon, the eastern seaboard of Southern Luzon and the eastern seaboard of Visayas.
"Fishing boats and other small seacrafts are advised not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves," it said. - KBK, GMA News
