PSBank head denies leaking Corona bank records to prosecution

February 9, 2012 8:23pm
The president of the Philippine Savings Bank (PSBank) on Thursday denied leaking the bank records of Chief Justice Renato Corona to the prosecution, which submitted photocopies of the documents to the Senate impeachment court.

According to Pascual Garcia III, there were "differences" between the original bank records in their possession and the photocopied ones with the prosecution.

"In our determination, as far as we believe, the documents that were floating around did not come from us," said Garcia.

To convince the Senate to issue subpoenas on Corona's bank documents, the prosecution attached the photocopied bank records to its petition, saying they were handed to them by a “source.”

But Garcia said the documents in the possession of the prosecution were probably fake.

On Thursday, Garcia confirmed the existence of the bank accounts of Corona as alleged by the prosecution, including those with account numbers: 089-121021861; 089-121020122; 089-121019513; 089-121017358; 089-131002826. But when pressed on Corona's dollar accounts, Garcia was tight-lipped, saying he did not want to face criminal liability under the Foreign Currency Deposit Law.

Defense lawyer and spokesperson Tranquil Salvador III said filing criminal charges against individuals responsible for the spread of the "leaked" bank records "remains an option."

Another defense lawyer, Jose Roy III, insisted that the prosecution's acquisition of the bank records was "a violation of the law."

"The law prohibits the disclosure of those documents. So kapag hawak mo iyon, dapat alam mo na... Don't tell me hindi mo alam kung ano iyon, sobrang tanga mo naman," he said. — Mark Dalan Merueñas/KBK, GMA News
