NDRRMC: Visayas quake death toll rises to 34, missing at 71

The death toll from the powerful earthquake that devastated Negros Oriental last Monday rose to 34 as of Thursday night, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said.
 
In its 8 p.m. update, the NDRRMC said 54 were injured while 71 remain missing in the wake of Monday's incident.
 
Of the 34 fatalities, 13 were from Guihulngan City; seven from Jimalalud; three from Tayasan; one from Bindoy; two from Manjuyod; two from Ayungon; and six from La Libertad in Negros Oriental.
 
Forty-two of the 54 injured were from Guihulngan and 12 from Jimalalud.
 
The NDRRMC said the quake had affected at least 17,681 families or 88,407 people in 70 villages in eight towns and one city.
 
Of these, 4,527 families or 22,657 people are being served in 14 evacuation centers.
 
Roads and bridges
 
Three bridges in Negros Oriental - one each in La Libertad, Jimalalud and Guihulngan - remained impassable as of Thursday night.
 
One road section along Dumaguete North Road remained inaccessible.
 
The NDRRMC pegged the cost of damage at P265.759 million.
 
At least 1,154 houses were destroyed and 1,496 were damaged. — ELR, GMA News
