Manila cops keep alert level up at SC for possible pro-, anti-Corona rallies
Following Thursday's show of force by supporters of impeached Chief Justice Renato Corona, police in Manila remained on alert near the Supreme Court premises Friday.
Manila Police District spokesman Chief Inspector Erwin Margarejo said they are not taking chances pro- and anti-Corona groups may hold rallies in the area again.
He added that while there are no anti-riot police deployed to the high court premises, they remain on alert for possible mobilizations near the high court, radio dzBB's Carlo Mateo reported.
On Thursday, supporters of Corona, including SC employees wearing red, gathered at the high court to denounce the ongoing impeachment trial.
Because of the number of supporters, two roads nearby were closed, Padre Faura Street and Taft Avenue.
Many of the supporters brought streamers with messages such as “Uphold the rule of law” and “Uphold judicial freedom.” The rally was peaceful.
Corona and his wife Cristina stood on the balcony of the SC building. The chief justice waved to supporters and became emotional.
The SC had taken up Thursday various motions related to Corona's impeachment trial at the Senate.
While the high court issued a temporary restraining order against the disclosure of Corona's dollar accounts, it deferred ruling on a separate petition filed by Corona seeking to nullify the impeachment trial. –KG, GMA News
