Flower prices start going up as Valentine's Day nears
With Valentine's Day fast approaching, the prices of flowers – traditionally associated with the occasion – have started to go up.
At the Dangwa flower market in Manila, prices of roses, tulips, sunflowers and stargazers have gone up, dzBB radio reported Saturday.
Vendors expect the prices to go even higher this coming week and on Valentine's Day eve.
For now, vendors noted an average P50 increase in flower prices, including roses, which sold at P250 per dozen, the report said.
A bouquet of long-stemmed roses sells for P450 from P400, even as Ecuadorean roses commanded prices of as high as P250 per stem, up from P150 before.
Holland tulips sold for P150, up from the previous P100.
On the other hand, the report said artificial roses were also sold at P50.
Despite the high prices, the report said buyers still flocked to Dangwa to buy the flowers in time for Feb. 14, even as more are expected to crowd the flower market there in the coming days.
Rainy Valentine's Day
Meanwhile, lovers in parts of Visayas and Mindanao may want to bring an umbrella or raincoat for their date, while those in Baguio City may want to bring jackets.
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the rain is due to the tail-end of a cold front.
"Sa magsingirog, lalo sa Araw ng Mga Puso, magdala kayo ng payong at kapote sa lugar na tinatamaan ng tail-end of a cold front," PAGASA forecaster Manny Mendoza said in an interview on dzBB radio.
PAGASA's extended forecast as of 5 a.m. Saturday indicated partly to at times cloudy skies with isolated rain showers in Metro Manila and much of Luzon, along with Metro Davao and Zamboanga City.
But mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms loom over Iloilo, Bacolod, Metro Cebu, Tacloban and Cagayan de Oro Cities.
On the other hand, summer capital Baguio City may have very cold weather from 12 to 25 degrees Celsius on Feb. 14. Temperatures in Tagaytay may range from 21 to 28 degrees on that day.
