February 12, 2012 9:18am
Five suspected robbers shot dead a village watchman and wounded a student in Quezon City before midnight Saturday, but one of them was killed in an encounter with police before dawn Sunday.

Police are now tracking down at least four other suspects following the incident, radio dzBB's Glen Juego reported Sunday.

The report said police initially identified the slain village watchman as Elmer Alfonso, while the slain suspect was not immediately identified.

The slain suspect was described as 40 to 45 years old. Recovered from him were a cal-.45 pistol, cal-.38 revolver and a bladed weapon.

An initial investigation showed the robbers held up passengers of a jeep in Quezon City at 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

The men took the bag and wristwatch of a female student, and shot her when she tried to resist. The student was brought to the Bernardino Hospital for treatment.

A group of village watchmen tried to run after the suspects, who shot Alfonso. Alfonso was rushed to the Manila Central University Hospital but died before doctors could treat his injuries.

Police cornered one of the suspects at Dimaano Compound in Balon Bato village, and shot him during the encounter. — LBG, GMA News
