President Aquino not attending burial rites for Rep. Iggy

February 12, 2012 1:58pm
President Benigno Aquino III is not attending the wake or burial rites for the late Negros Occidental Rep. Ignacio “Iggy” Arroyo Jr., Malacañang said Sunday.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said in a radio interview that Aquino had never been close to the former congressman.

“No, he is not ... I am not quite sure if the president has been friendly with the late Iggy Arroyo,” she said on government-run dzRB radio, when asked if Aquino will attend Arroyo’s wake and burial.

Rep. Arroyo, a brother-in-law of former President Gloria Arroyo, had died in London after a lingering illness earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Valte said the Palace will leave to the Commission on Elections and the Pasay court the decision on whether Mrs. Arroyo can attend the wake and burial.

The former president, now a congresswoman representing Pampanga’s fifth district, is under hospital arrest at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City.

Valte said the court had asked for details of where and when the burial will be, so proper security measures can be readied.

Iiwanan namin [ang desisyon] sa judge kung papayagan o hindi. Importante malaman ng DILG at PNP ang magiging parameters kung sakali pumayag ang korte para ma-setup ang security," she said.

(We will leave it to the judge on whether to allow Arroyo to go. It is important that the Interior Department and Philippine National Police know the parameters of the security situation so they can respond accordingly.) — LBG, GMA News
