Weather: Wind convergence may cause rains, flash floods in Luzon

February 13, 2012 12:10pm
The weather disturbance that was earlier considered as a potential cyclone has dissipated before noon on Monday but state weather forecasters said a wind convergence may cause rain in parts of Luzon.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration's (PAGASA) 10:30 a.m. advisory said: "Northern and Central Luzon will experience cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms becoming widespread rains over its eastern section which may trigger flash floods and landslides due to wind convergence."

A wind convergence is a condition where winds from different directions meet.

Earlier, PAGASA said the weather disturbance — a low-pressure area (LPA) — entered Philippine territory last week, but would most likely not become a cyclone.

The LPA also brought floods over parts of Mindanao that prompted the evacuation of several families.

Teenage girl killed

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council earlier said aAn 18-year-old girl was killed as flash floods destroyed homes in Camarines Sur.

On its 6:00 a.m. update on Monday, the NDRRMC said flash floods were caused by heavy rain brought by a low pressure area last week.

It identified the fatality as Lilia Alarcio, a resident of Munti Calbaryo village in Buhi town in Camarines Sur.

The NDRRMC said she was swept away by a strong river current as she was trying to cross the Buhi River. Her body has been retrieved. - VVP, GMA News
