1 killed, 3 hurt in ‘basketbrawl’ at Bilibid; probe on

February 16, 2012 9:30am
An inmate was killed while three others were reported injured after a basketball game sparked a riot inside the New Bilibid Prison in southern Metro Manila Wednesday night.

Bureau of Corrections head Gaudencio Pangilinan ordered an investigation as he vowed heads will roll over the incident, radio dzBB’s Sam Nielsen reported.

Killed in the riot was inmate Edwin Soriano, who was allegedly stabbed with a barbecue stick.

An initial investigation showed the riot stemmed from a basketball game where the coach from the “Sputnik” gang questioned a call from the referee.

The dzBB report quoted Pangilinan as saying the brawl stemmed from “mob behavior.”

For now, those involved in the brawl were transferred to other cells to prevent further tension, the report said. — RSJ, GMA News
