Motorcycle lanes dry run over, strict enforcement starts Monday
No more kid gloves or leniency starting Monday, according to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) after a one-week dry run of enforcing motorcycle lanes along Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA).
MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said traffic enforcers will start issuing traffic violation receipts to violators starting Monday, instead of just giving them a 15-minute safety seminar.
In a news release, Tolentino also said the MMDA will go after riders with no helmets and proper safety gear, as well as those using mobile phones while driving.
“We will also not tolerate overloading. Based on Land Transportation Office regulations, a motorcycle should only have one passenger, a back seater. We will also be implementing the rule where motorcycle headlights should be on even during daylight,” he said.
The MMDA started the one-week dry run along the 23.8-km EDSA on Valentine’s Day. It said no motorcycle-related accident was recorded along EDSA during the dry run.
“There has been a smooth implementation of the EDSA blue lane since Tuesday. Hopefully it will stay this way. This also shows that our riders and motorists are aware of the program,” Tolentino said.
From February 14 to 17, the MMDA said 3,344 violators were apprehended by MMDA traffic enforcers and made to undergo a 15-minute seminar on safe motorcycle driving.
Also, Tolentino said there has been a steady decrease in the number of violators since Tuesday, an indication of increasing compliance among motorcycle riders.
On the first day of the dry run, 1,403 violators were apprehended; 855 on Wednesday, and 692 on Thursday. On Friday, as of 11 a.m. there were 394 violators. — ELR, GMA News
