Palace not keen on Lenten ‘ceasefire’ with Corona camp
Malacañang is not keen on a Lenten ceasefire in its word war with the camp of impeached Chief Justice Renato Corona, as it insisted it is merely “clarifying” the issue for the public.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte cited President Benigno Aquino III’s insistence he was not attacking Corona personally but simplifying the issue for ordinary Filipinos.
“Mukhang nasagot ng Pangulong Aquino ang sa sinasabing ceasefire at ang thoughts ng pangulo, ‘if and when I feel I can clarify certain things for the public,’ he will not hesitate to do so," Valte said on government-run dzRB radio, when asked about the prospect of a Lenten ceasefire.
Earlier, Aquino was quoted by dzRB as saying he saw nothing wrong with his criticism against Corona, saying such criticisms were within the essence of democracy.
He added his charges were directed not at Corona’s person but at the “system” of corruption.
Aquino was in Aurora province to inaugurate a P509-million hospital funded by the Japanese government.
Meanwhile, Valte said the upcoming appearance of Justice Secretary Leila de Lima at the Senate impeachment trial shows the Executive Department is “cooperating” with the impeachment court.
“Tayo ay sasagot kung tayo ay pinatawag (We will heed the subpoena when we are called),” she said.
She also said there will be no gag order on officials under the Executive Department. She said officials ranging from the Palace record officer to the registry of deeds had already testified.
Meanwhile, Valte said Malacañang will remain open in engaging Catholic bishops on various issues, including land reform.
“I think these issues will always be there, we have always been open to the bishops in discussing the issues,” she said.
The fact remains we have always been open to coming across on certain issues kahit saang sector galing," she said.
Budding impeach moves vs PNoy
Also in the same radio interview this Sunday, Valte said Malacañang is “ignoring” at least two budding impeachment complaints against President Aquino, saying these do not appear to have a chance of prospering.
The first possible complaint, she said, may not even get the endorsement of the opposition bloc in the House of Representatives, and that even Rep. Edcel Lagman, an opposition leader, is not keen on endorsing it.
She was referring to a property awarded to the SM Group in Baguio City.
"But Aquino was not even president at the time the supposed awarding occurred,” she said, adding Aquino has no involvement in the deal as it was opened for bidding in 1997.
As for the supposed second complaint, she said no one appears to be keen on endorsing it. She did not elaborate. — LBG, GMA News
