Phivolcs: Quakes hit Negros, Samar

February 19, 2012 10:20pm
At least two quakes rocked Negros and Samar in the Visayas late Sunday, with state seismologists warning of possible aftershocks from the Negros quake.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the first quake measuring magnitude 4.0 was recorded in Negros at 5:04 p.m. It said the epicenter was traced to 9 km southwest of Canlaon City in Negros Oriental.

Some areas in Negros Oriental had suffered the brunt of a magnitude-6.9 quake that devastated Negros last Feb. 6.

Phivolcs said Sunday's quake was felt at Intensity I in Canlaon City.

While it said no damage was expected, aftershocks were likely.

Meanwhile, a second quake measuring magnitude 2.5 was recorded in the Eastern Samar area at 6:22 p.m.

Phivolcs said the quake was tectonic in origin, with the epicenter at 67 km southeast of Borongan, Eastern Samar.

No damage or aftershock was expected from the second quake, Phivolcs said. - KBK, GMA News
