Phivolcs: 17 quakes hit Visayas, 14 of them in Negros Oriental in 12-hr span

At least 17 quakes rattled the Visayas area, most of them in Negros Oriental, in a span of 12 hours starting Sunday afternoon, state seismologists said.
 
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said 14 of the quakes were in Negros Oriental, which bore the brunt of a magnitude-6.9 quake last Feb. 6.
 
In its bulletin, Phivolcs said the first quake was recorded at 5:04 p.m. Sunday with the epicenter at 9 km southwest of Canlaon City, Negros Oriental.
 
Phivolcs said the magnitude-4.0 quake was felt at Intensity III in Guihulngan, Negros Oriental; and Intensity I in Canlaon City.
 
A second quake measuring magnitude 2.5 was recorded at 6:22 p.m. at 67 km southeast of Borongan, Eastern Samar.
 
Succeeding quakes
 
Phivolcs said the following earthquakes were recorded after the one in Borongan, Samar.
 
  • Magnitude 2.7 at 6:44 p.m. at 13 km west of Canlaon City, with aftershocks expected.
  • Magnitude 3.8 at 7:09 p.m., with the epicenter at 71 km northeast of Borongan, Eastern Samar. Aftershocks were expected.
  • Magnitude 2.6 at 8:12 p.m., with the epicenter at 4 km southeast of Tayasan, Negros Oriental. It was felt at Intensity I in Jimalalud and Tayasan in Negros Oriental.
  • Magnitude 3.9 at 8:37 p.m., with the epicenter at 36 km northeast of Borongan, Eastern Samar. Aftershocks were expected.
  • Magnitude 2.4 at 9:50 p.m. with the epicenter at 14 km northwest of Guihulngan in Negros Oriental. Aftershocks were expected from the quake, Phivolcs said.
  • Magnitude 3.0 at 10:12 p.m. at 36 km northwest of Tanjay, Negros Oriental. Aftershocks were expected.
  • Magnitude 1.9 at 10:22 p.m. at 14 km southwest of Tayasan, Negros Oriental.
  • Magnitude 2.8 at 10:37 p.m., with the epicenter at 6 km northwest of Guihulngan City in Negros Oriental.
  • Magnitude 2.6 at 11:28 p.m. with the epicenter at 12 km southwest of Guihulngan in Negros Oriental.
  • Magnitude 3.4 at 11:35 p.m., with the epicenter at 16 km southwest of Tayasan, Negros Oriental.
  • Magnitude 3.2 at 11:55 p.m. Its epicenter was 35 km southwest of Tayasan, Negros Oriental.
  • Magnitude 3.0 at 2:06 a.m. Monday, with the epicenter at 21 km southwest of Tayasan, Negros Oriental.
  • Magnitude 3.0 at 3:19 a.m., with the epicenter at 25 km northwest of Guihulngan, Negros Oriental.
  • Magnitude 3.3 at 4:26 a.m., with the epicenter at 22 km northwest of Tayasan, Negros Oriental.
  • Magnitude 2.4 at 4:53 a.m., with the epicenter at 23 km northwest of Tayasan, Negros Oriental.
