Agriculture Dept. starts pulling out retailer teams from quake-hit areas

February 21, 2012 10:21am
Noting the situation has started to normalize, the Department of Agriculture has started pulling out its food retailer teams from areas in Negros devastated by a magnitude-6.9 quake last Feb. 6.

The DA said the pullout stemmed from its monitoring that showed prices of agricultural products are returning to normal levels, radio dzBB's Allan Gatus reported.

Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala said the teams had sold some P5 million in agricultural products during the time they were deployed there.

Alcala had deployed the teams to Negros Oriental shortly after the Feb. 6 quake to ensure prices of agricultural products remain stable.

The dzBB report said the teams in Tayasan, Jimalalud, Ayungon and La Libertad towns will be the first to be pulled out.

On the other hand, the team in Guihulngan City, one of the areas hit hardest by the quake, may be pulled out next week.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council had said at least 51 were killed while 62 remain missing in the wake of the Feb. 6 quake. — RSJ, GMA News
