Palace will not intervene on issue regarding Iggy Arroyo's remains

February 22, 2012 2:54pm
The Aquino administration has no plan of intervening in the issue between Aleli Arroyo and Grace Ibuna on the custody of the remains of the late Negros Oriental Rep. Ignacio “Iggy” Arroyo.

At a press briefing in Malacañang on Wednesday, presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said private international law will govern the situation or conflict between Mrs. Arroyo and Ibuna.

“There is no need for the government to interfere in the intramural between the two ladies,” he said.

Mr. Arroyo, younger brother of former First Gentleman Jose Miguel “Mike” Arroyo, died in London late January due to complications arising from his liver ailment.

The Royal Courts of Justice in London has granted joint custody of the remains of Mr. Arroyo to his current partner, Ibuna, and daughter, Bernardina Arroyo-Tantoco.

It also ordered Mrs. Arroyo, the late lawmaker’s second wife, to pay P6 million in legal costs, including the repatriation of her husband’s remains from London. She, however, refused to honor the order, saying since all the parties involved in the case are Filipinos, Philippine law should prevail.  — Amita O. Legaspi/KBK, GMA News
