Known Filipino cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Manny Calayan, has filed a $2.5-million lawsuit in the United States against a former employee who performed medical procedures outside their clinic in the US, leading to what he called a "black propaganda" against them.
In a report of Lhar Santiago over GMA's "24 Oras" newscast on Tuesday, Calayan said: "’Yung isang employee nagwork siya sa ibang lugar out of our premises. Nagbebenta rin siya ng gamot. Gumagawa rin siya ng warts removal…outside the clinic.”
“Ang kinaso namin sa kanya embezzlement. That is marami siyang nakuhang pera sa amin, plus the damages na ginawa niya sa amin so that is worth around $2.5 million,” said Calayan, owner of the Calayan Surgicenter Corporation.
Meanwhile, Calayan denied that their clinic in the US was shut down.
“Kami ho ay nandito at hindi kami nagsara, hindi ho kami nagshutdown, wala hong naaresto, walang problemang nangyari except na matatawag ko itong, it’s a frame up. And it’s a black propaganda to destroy us,” Calayan said.
Complaints of injuries
In August last year, California medical authorities shut down the medical clinic run by Calayan as it was allegedly carrying out medical procedures “without any licensed medical personnel present."
In a news release, the Medical Board of California said patients complained of injuries brought about by the laser treatments at the Calayan Medical Clinic in West Hollywood.
The medical board's website described Calayan’s practice as “unlicensed," where medical procedures are being conducted without any licensed medical personnel present.
“The mission of the Medical Board is public protection, and this action reflects the board’s ongoing commitment to that mission," said Linda Whitney, executive director of the Medical Board.
Husband and wife tandem
According to the website of the husband and wife tandem of Doctors Manny and Pie Calayan "beauty should not just be a commodity but a privilege."
While Pie formulates "her own skin-care products," Manny "delicately applies the scalpel to a patient’s body," it said.
Both believe "that beauty should no longer be the private preserve of the rich and the famous but of ordinary Filipinos as well," the site said. - VVP, GMA News
