Anti-mining groups to launch year-round streamer campaign March 3

February 24, 2012 8:53am
Anti-mining groups will launch this March a nationwide streamer campaign to protest mining activities, especially in ancestral domains of indigenous people.

Dubbed the “Thousand Streamer Campaign,” the movement protests what organizers called a sellout of the country’s resources to local and transnational firms.

"The year-long campaign will be highlighted by hanging of streamers denouncing mining during dates significant to mining, environment and indigenous peoples," an article posted on the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines news site said.

It said the nationwide hanging of streamers against mining will start on March 3, the 17th anniversary of the enactment of Mining Act of 1995.

The campaign will culminate a year later, on March 3, 2013.

The Kalipunan ng mga Katutubong Mamamayan ng Pilipinas (KAMP), which is leading the campaign, expects the support of groups from the Church, academe and indigenous organizations against mining, such as Tunay na Alyansa ng Bayan Alay sa Katutubo (Tabak), Kabataan Para sa Tribung Pilipino (Katribu) and Partylist ng Katribu.

According to the CBCP article, some 60 percent of more than one million hectares of land approved for mining explorations are situated within the ancestral domain of the indigenous communities.

Significant dates

The campaign also notes other significant dates that include:
  • Earth Day on April 22
  • International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples on August 9
  • Annual Mine Safety Week sponsored by the DENR and Chamber of Mines on the second week of November 2012.
"Organizers are urging various sectors and individuals to join the campaign and organize discussion groups, fora, and similar activities to tackle and involve more people in the issue of mining and indigenous peoples’ situation," the CBCP said. — LBG, GMA News
