PAGASA: Weather for EDSA-1 anniversary weekend sunny

February 24, 2012 1:25pm
Sunny weather awaits Filipinos who want to take part in the 26th anniversary of the EDSA-1 People Power revolt on Saturday, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said Friday.

PAGASA forecaster Aldczar Aurelio said this sunny weather may extend up to at least Sunday, although rainy weather still looms over Mindanao.

"Maganda ang panahon, maaliwalas at mainit ang panahon hanggang Sabado at Linggo," Aurelio said in an interview on dzBB radio.

But he said Mindanao will still be rainy because of the easterlies, or winds from the east.

Aurelio also said that while summer has not fully set in, the hot temperatures experienced Thursday and Friday indicate the hot, dry season is near.

On Saturday, Filipinos will mark the 26th anniversary of the EDSA-1 revolt that ousted then strongman Ferdinand Marcos and catapulted Corazon Aquino to the presidency.

Mrs. Aquino is the mother of incumbent President Benigno Aquino III.

March on eve of EDSA-1 anniversary

In Manila, militant groups marched to historic Mendiola Bridge near Malacañang to protest what they called the broken promises of EDSA-1.

Members of militant women's group Gabriela marched from the Far Eastern University area to Mendiola to air their grievances, radio dzBB's Carlo Mateo reported.

The report said the protesters lamented the continued high prices of basic goods and petroleum products, and the high rates of power, water and tuition.

However, the rally was relatively peaceful, without any violent confrontation with police. — LBG, GMA News
