February 25, 2012 11:20am
A man who ran amuck hacked dead at least five members of a family in Numancia town in Aklan province in Western Visayas early Saturday, police said.

Numancia police head Inspector Benjo Clarete said town police arrested the suspect, who he said yielded peacefully.

"'Yung initial investigation, nasiraan ng ulo ang suspect. Upon responding, ang suspect narito sa area, na-apprehend ng ating kapulisan, peacefully apprehended," he said in an interview on dzBB radio.

He initially identified the suspect as one Errol Roldan, who he said was brought to the town police station.

Clarete said four members of the Rivas family were instantly killed when Roldan hacked them at about 6 a.m.

Two members of the Rivas family were rushed to a nearby hospital, but Clarete cited sketchy reports that one of them was declared dead on arrival.

A separate report on Remate said the victims were still asleep in their houses in Bulwang village.

It identified the fatalities as Salvacion Rivas, 84; Baltazar Rivas, 52; Anunsacion Rivas; Luciano Rivas; and Felicidad Rivas.

A sixth victim, Rosa Rivas, 65, was in critical condition, it said. — LBG, GMA News
