February 25, 2012 4:54pm
A policeman was shot dead in Manila Saturday afternoon, with his suspected assailant himself getting killed several moments later.

Police said PO1 Samuel dela Cruz was shot dead at the corner of Antonio Rivera Street and C.M. Recto Avenue, according to a report on dzRH radio.

His suspected assailant, a criminology student initially identified as Roderick, was shot dead after allegedly trying to grapple for the firearm of a policeman.

"Habang nagpapatrolya (ang biktima) sa duty niya, ang suspect lumapit sa kanya... at biglang binaril ang pulis natin (Dela Cruz was on duty at the time. At the corner of Rivera and C.M. Recto, the suspect approached him and shot him)," Manila Police Dsitrict Station 2 head Superintendent Ernesto Tendero said.

Dela Cruz was rushed to the Metropolitan Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Tendero said a team from the nearby MPD Police Station 11 arrested the suspect at Soler Street.

He claimed that while the team was preparing to bring the suspect to a hospital for a medical checkup, the suspect allegedly tried to seize one of the policemen's firearm.

"Paglabas ng presinto, nang-agaw daw ng baril ang suspect (As they were leaving the precinct, the suspect allegedly tried to take the firearm of one of his escorts)," he said.

Tendero said they are looking into information a fraternity war may have been the motive behind the shooting of Dela Cruz.

"Magkalaban yata sa fraternity (The suspect and the victim appeared to belong to rival fraternities)," he said but did not elaborate. — LBG, GMA News
