Palace mum on El Shaddai not joining Iglesia ni Cristo gathering

February 26, 2012 2:25pm
Malacañang on Sunday sought to project an air of indifference to the decision of the Catholic charismatic group El Shaddai not to join a religious gathering by the Iglesia Ni Cristo in Manila on Feb. 28.

On the other hand, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte appealed to participants in the upcoming gathering not to litter the grounds and clean the place after the gathering.

Wala kaming reaction doon. Sa aking pagkakaalam activity mismo 'yan ng INC [Iglesia ni Cristo] para sa kanilang myembro," she said on government-run dzRB radio, when asked to comment on the El Shaddai’s decision not to join the Feb. 28 gathering.

The INC will hold a religious gathering at the Luneta area on Tuesday, even as some sectors speculated it could be a show of force to back the supporters of impeached Chief Justice Renato Corona.

Former Justice Secretary Serafin Cuevas, an INC member, is an active defense counsel for Corona in the ongoing impeachment trial.

When asked if the Palace was “relieved” that the El Shaddai, a Cathloc charismatic group that claims having millions of members, would not join the INC event, Valte refused to comment.

“We don’t think of it that way. Sa amin (To us) it’s entirely a religious celebration,” Valte said.

On the other hand, she said the Palace expects the INC to have already coordinated with the Manila city government for security and peace and order arrangements.

But she also urged the participants to “pick up after ourselves” after the gathering.

“Sana magtulung-tulong tayo, inabutan natin malinis ang paligid sana pag-alis natin malinis din (We should help each other. If the place is clean when we arrive, it should also be clean when we leave),” she said. — LBG, GMA News
