Following the fatal hazing of a law student in Antipolo City last February, police in Metro Manila are keeping a tighter watch on fraternities and gangs in schools in the city.

Metro Manila police officials are also planning to meet with school administrators to find ways to prevent hazing, radio dzBB’s Cecilia Villarosa reported.

National Capital Region police head Chief Superintendent Alan Purisima said they are looking at the possibility of updating their lists of school fraternity leaders.

He said they would appeal to fraternity leaders to reject a culture of violence especially after what happened to law student Marvin Reglos last month.

Reglos died last month while undergoing hazing in Antipolo City during his initiation rites into a fraternity at the San Beda Law School.

His mother Myrna said his brutal hazing death was a “bittersweet” one, as it was a great loss yet was an eye-opener to the dark side of fraternities.

For its part, the Department of Education advised students to think at least twice before joining fraternities or gangs, especially when they go to college.

The DepEd also asked parents to keep watch over their children’s activities lest they attempt to join fraternities. –KG, GMA News
