'Ridiculously insane' ideas to smuggle drugs in UAE
Authorities in the United Arab Emirates, home to over 600,000 Filipinos, say every few days "criminals come up with ridiculously insane ideas to smuggle drugs," a report of the news site Gulf News said on Thursday. The report said "no matter how creative their efforts to hide drugs might be, most traffickers are invariably caught." Just last week, a man was arrested at the Dubai Airport after authorities found over three kilograms of heroin hidden under leg bandages. Heady chocolate treat (February 2012) After a tip by the Dubai police, an Asian woman was nabbed at Sri Lanka's Colombo airport after trying to smuggle four boxes of Ferrero Rocher chocolates laden with 1.5 kilograms of cocaine.
'Masked' drugs (February 2012) UAE authorities alerted their Cape Town counterparts in Africa about carnival masks laden with 2.5 kilograms of drugs.
'Versatile' laptop (October 2011) At the Dubai Airport, a Nigerian passenger's laptop contained not only hidden files but also 1.8 kilograms of hidden methamphetamine.
Condom in uterus (October 2011) An Indonesian woman filled a condom with drugs and put it in her uterus before going to Dubai.
Revved up engine (October 2011) In one of the world's biggest drug busts, authorities found 213 kilograms of amphetamine, worth about Dh40 million (about P440 million) inside the engine parts of an Iranian ship. Orange 'harvest' (June 2011) Dubai authorities found 58 kilograms of drugs hidden in oranges.
Under where??? (March 2011) After receiving a tip, authorities searched an African woman's underwear and found 750 grams of narcotic crystals glued to her underwear.
Not-so-festive cheer (December 2010) Some 1,751gm of marijuana and cocaine were concealed in a Christmas package.
Metal screws (August 2010) An African passenger's unusually heavy luggage revealed 24 large metal screws containing 8.4 kilograms of drugs worth about Dh2 million (about P220 million).
