11 years after, COA invalidates Manila-BGEI property deal

March 26, 2012 10:54pm

Eleven years after the City of Manila bought a 1,000-square meter property from Basa-Guidote Enterprises Inc.—the company of Cristina Corona’s family—the Commission on Audit (COA) issued a notice of disallowance and said that the payment of P34.7 million must be returned to the city government.

According to an exclusive report on GMA News’ “24 Oras,” Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim already called for an investigation of the transaction, which happened during the term of his political ally-turned-rival, former Mayor Lito Atienza.

Upon review of the transaction, COA chairperson Ma. Gracia Pulido Tan said they discovered that the commission had issued a notice of suspension to Atienza in 2002, and gave him 10 days to submit the required documents.

COA was pressuring him after he testified in the impeachment court, Atienza said In the report.

“Alam mo, maraming sumisipsip ngayon sa Pangulong Aquino. This is plain and simple harassment. If at all I can call it persecution of a witness,” Atienza said.

But according to Lim, COA was the one who reviewed the transaction, not his office.

“Yung mga personal attacks niya, no comment na ko. I don’t want to dignify these lies and baseless comments. Hindi naman ako nagpapaimbestiga, eh. COA sent us a directive inquiring as to what happened the previous years… 2002,” Lim said. —AL/VS, GMA News
