Rovio Entertainment, the maker of the massive hit game “Angry Birds,” has acquired Futuremark Games Studio, a maker of games for the PC, Xbox, and Apple iOS devices.
Expected to further boost Rovio’s stock in the gaming industry, Futuremark Games Studio has developed such titles as Unstoppable Gorg, Hungribles, and Shattered Horizon, tech site CNET said.
“They are an incredibly talented and experienced team, and we are thrilled to have them on board. Rovio’s success is founded on the excellence of our team, and Futuremark Games Studio is going to be a superb addition,” Mikael Hed, Rovio Entertainment’s CEO, said in a statement.
CNET noted this was the second acquisition for Rovio in less than a year, after it snapped up Kombo Animation Studio last June.
While many see Rovio as relying mainly on “Angry Birds” for its success, the company has “diversified” into other forms of entertainment, coming up with Angry Birds-themed toys, shirts, novelties and even cookbooks.
The latest version of the game, “Angry Birds Space,” scored 10 million downloads in just three days.
“With Angry Birds, we have successfully launched not only a strong new brand, but also a whole new entertainment franchise. Angry Birds will continue to grow, and we aim to create more similar success stories,” CNET quoted Hed as saying in a statement last year. — TJD, GMA News
