Globe Telecom will be supporting the World Wildlife Fund-Philippines’ (WWF) Earth Hour by switching off lights in its major offices and billboards on March 31 at 8:30 p.m.
“Globe is aware of how the effects of climate change can impact society and businesses and we are committed to working with various environmental organizations such as WWF-Philippines to help with community and environment conservation efforts,” said Rob I. Nazal, Head of Globe Corporate Social Responsibility.
This year, the leading telecom company went beyond the Earth Hour partnership by holding climate change and Earth Hour awareness sessions for employees prior to the Earth Hour Switch-off. Through its flagship Corporate Social Responsibility program, Globe Bridging Communities, the company also holds other initiatives geared towards environment protection and sustainability which include the third Globe Cordillera Challenge slated for May 5, an event launched in 2010 to raise consciousness and funds for the reforestation of the Cordillera Mountains.
Globe recently strengthened its environment preservation efforts by donating P1 million to the Philippine Fund for Nature (PFN), an initiative of the WWF Philippines, designed to ensure the long term growth of the organization’s wide range of projects for preserving the country’s natural resources.
This year’s Earth Hour Switch-off events are scheduled to be held simultaneously in three cities in the Philippines: Ayala Triangle Gardens, Makati City, Fort San Pedro, Cebu City, and SM City Davao Parking lot in Davao City, making this year’s Earth Hour celebration the biggest environmental celebration in recent years.
In 2011, 1,661 cities and municipalities in the Philippines switched their lights off as a sign of solidarity to help save the planet. This year’s Earth Hour Switch-off on March 31, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., aims to encourage more than 10 million participants in the Philippines to switch their lights off for the environment. WWF also launched their “I Will If You Will” digital campaign this year for people to go beyond the hour by empowering them to share a personal dare with the world by asking everyone what they are willing to do to save the planet.
