PBA-DL: Big Chill leapfrogs Cebuana Lhuillier, Cagayan kept winless

The Big Chill Superchargers brought out the big guns in the third quarter, exploding for a pivotal 14-0 run en route to inflicting the first loss on the Cebuana Lhuillier Gems, 68-52, Monday at the Arena in San Juan, in the 2012 PBA D-League Foundation Cup. Eight Superchargers scored at least five points, with 6'4" Fil-Am forward Alex Mallari leading the attack, to help Big Chill improve to second place with a 3-1 record. Entering the quarter down four, 26-30, former National University center Jewel Ponferrada ignited the rally with back-to-back baskets. When the dust settled, BigChill had turned the tables on their foe, getting up ahead 40-32. The Gems fought back however, getting to within four with a quarter left, 44-40, and then trailing by a single point after a Bacon Austria lay-up and a Simon Atkins charity. But the Superchargers countered with another huge run, reeling off 11 unanswered, to extend the gap between the two teams to 12, 55-43, after a Mar Villahermosa triple served as the capper, with four minutes left in the affair. "We started playing good defense that's why our offense got us going," said Big Chill coach Robert Sison. "The first half was Cebuana's so we really tried to make the second half ours." In the first game, the Junior Powerade Tigers defeated the Cagayan Rising Suns, 67-61, for their second win in three outings. Two Fighting Maroons hoping to make a comeback this UAAP season spelled the difference, with Alvin Padilla tallying 19 points, six rebounds and three assists and Mark Lopez notching 19 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and two steals, as the Tigers overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to capture the win. The action doesn't let up as a doubleheader is scheduled for Tuesday, April 3, also at The Arena in San Juan, before the Holy Week break, as Erase Plantcenta takes on RnW Pacific Pipes at 2 p.m. and Boracay Rum tackles Blackwater Sports at 4 p.m.   The scores: First game Jr. Powerade 67—Padilla 19, Lopez 19, Silungan 10, Juruena 6, Escueta 5, Wong 3, Gingerich 2, Gamboa 2, Hipolito 1, Reyes 0, Cubo 0.
