The National Statistics Office will start conducting the 2012 Updating of the List of Establishments survey in May at a cost of P117 million, according to the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB).   “[The survey] aims to provide a register of establishments containing information which will be used to obtain an updated and reliable sampling frame for the census and survey of establishments and enterprises,” NSCB said in a statement.    NSCB claimed that the survey will be “useful for economic and business planning and decision-making.”   The new survey will introduce ‘disaggregation’ of businesses down to the barangay and industry sub-class levels.   The NSCB gave the updating of list of establishments the green light in early March, and the survey questionnaires would be distributed on May 2 and collected on June 16.   The preliminary and final results will be released in January and December 2013, respectively.   The cost of updating the List of Establishments was estimated at P117 million, including personal services and maintenance and other operating expenses.   The state-run statistics agency estimated government will spend P117 per establishment in the 2012 survey.   The information to be collected from the establishments include:

  • Business name
  • Registered name
  • Franchise
  • Business tax identification number

  • Economic area
  • Contact information of the establishment
  • Economic organization
  • Legal organization

  • Name and address of main office
  • Total assets
  • Name and address of parent company
  • Subsidiaries and
  • Branches.
“Data furnished to the NSO will be kept strictly confidential and shall not be used as evidence in court for purposes of taxation, regulation or investigation,” NSCB noted.   The 2011 List of Establishments survey showed that there were 818,830 establishments in the country.   The sectors were wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (46.9 percent of all establishments), manufacturing (13.8 percent), and accommodation and food service activities (12.8 percent).    The 2011 survey noted more than half of the establishments or 67.5 percent were found in Luzon, 14.1 percent in the Visayas and 18.4 percent in Mindanao. —Rouchelle Dinglasan/VS
