2 killed, 8 downed by puffer fish dish in Negros Occidental
Two fishermen died while eight people were hospitalized after eating a "butete" (puffer fish) dish in Sagay City in Negros Occidental Tuesday night.
City disaster management officials said the incident occurred at about 6 p.m. in Purok Bombils in Old Sagay village in Sagay City, news site Visayan Daily Star reported.
Jose Aragaon of the Sagay City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council cited an initial information indicating the fishermen cooked the puffer fish to eat while drinking liquor.
Some neighbors also partook of the dish, but felt dizzy and started to vomit.
Aragaon said they sought assistance from the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council at 10 p.m. Tuesday.
He said fisherman Francisco Mapalo, 42, died upon arrival at the Alfredo E. Marañon Sr. Memorial District Hospital at about 11 p.m., while Romulo Celeste, 58, died while undergoing treatment.
Still under observation at the district hospital are:
- Theresa Belmoro, 34
- Belmoro's son Gabriel, 5; daughters Noemi, 2, and Abigail, 4
- Roy Hit, 30, who was said to have cooked the puffer fish with coconut milk
- Rommel Barcelona, 36
- Eric Bargabaldo, 44
- Ruby Ann Aligato, 34
Noemi and Abigail as well as Aligato had been discharged from the hospital, the Visayan Daily Star report said. — LBG, GMA News
