National Day of Children, hiniling ideklara tuwing Nobyembre 20

Upang maitaas ang kamalayan ng publiko sa pangangalaga at pagpapahalaga sa karapatan at kapakanan ng mga bata, isang panukalang batas ang inihain sa Kamara de Representantes upang ideklarang National Children's Day tuwing Nobyembre 20. Sa inihaing House Bill 5788 o “The National Children’s Day Act," binagyan-pansin ni Laguna Rep. Maria Evita Arago, ang dumaraming kaso ng pang-aabuso sa mga bata. “A number of children in the Philippines have been unfortunate victims of abuse, hazardous labor, child pornography, economic difficulties and life threatening situations," ayon sa kongresista. “One of the means to protect the rights of children is to elevate the level of awareness among Filipinos on the rights and welfare of children," pagdiin pa niya. Sa pagdaraos ng taunang aktibidad at mga programa tungkol sa pangangalaga sa kapakanan at karapatan, naniniwala si Arago na tataas ang kamalayan ng publiko tungkol sa nasabing usapin para ikabubuti ng mga paslit. Napili umano ni Arago ang Nobyembre 20 bilang pag-alaala sa ginawang pagratipika ng United Nations General Assembly sa Convention on the Rights of the Child at selebrasyon ng United Nations sa Universal Children’s Day. Sinabi ni Arago na bilang signatory sa United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, nararapat umanong gumawa ng hakbang ang Pilipinas para pangalagaan at ingatan ang karapatan ng mga bata para sa “survival, development, and the freedom to protect their interests." “It is the policy of the State to defend the rights of children to assistance, including proper care and nutrition, and special protection from all forms of neglect, abuse, cruelty, exploitation and other conditions prejudicial to their development," dagdag pa ng mambabatas. - RP/FRJ, GMA News
